Innovative Technologies for Massive Renewables Integration into The Grid

The European Union has committed to becoming climate-neutral by 2050 through the European Green Deal. Achieving this vision requires a profound transformation of Europe’s electricity system, enabling the large-scale integration of renewable energy while maintaining grid reliability, security and resilience.

The rapid deployment of renewable energy sources (RES), distributed energy resources, battery storage, electric vehicles and demand response is changing the way electricity networks operate. However, existing power grids were originally designed around centralized generation and face increasing challenges in accommodating variable renewable generation, ensuring power quality, and coordinating operations across transmission and distribution networks.

INNO4GRID addresses these challenges by developing an integrated suite of advanced technologies, software platforms and hardware solutions that support the operation of future renewable-based electricity systems. The project combines forecasting tools, wide-area monitoring systems, Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs), Dynamic Security Assessment, flexibility management and advanced TSO–DSO coordination within a single interoperable architecture known as the INNO4GRID Workbench.

The project will validate its solutions through large-scale demonstration activities across Norway, Hungary, the Western Balkans and Turkey, engaging Transmission System Operators (TSOs), Distribution System Operators (DSOs), Regional Coordination Centres (RCCs), renewable energy providers and flexibility service providers.

By improving grid intelligence, interoperability and operational flexibility, INNO4GRID contributes directly to Europe’s transition towards a secure, resilient and carbon-neutral energy system.
